Aseprite Script - Split Sprites Into Layers
A downloadable tool
🎯 Script: Split Sprites Into Layers
This tool turns a flat PNG sprite sheet into a clean, fully structured Aseprite file — with real groups, numbered layers, and everything ready to go.
🛠️ What exactly does it do?
- Run the script
- Enter the new file name
- Choose how your sheet is laid out: Horizontal Strip, Vertical Strip, By Rows or By Columns
- Set tile size and how many tiles per group
- Click “Import” — done!
It instantly creates a new file with all your tiles neatly sliced, grouped (Group 1, Group 2, etc.), and layers named 1, 2, 3… inside each group.
✨ What’s it for?
This script is ideal for:
- Organizing sprite sheets fast, without slicing manually
- Modular assets, breaking up characters, UI, props or animations
- Game dev pipelines, structuring files for team collaboration
- Animators, turning big flat sheets into layered frame-ready sets
- Artists who want to keep their work clean and organized from the start
💬 If you want to customize it more, I can help you or you can easily adapt it.
🚀 This is one of those little scripts that save you hours if you work with a lot of files. Do you already know what you are going to use it for?
